One of the simplest pleasures of a cottage stay on Whitestone Lake is stepping out for a peaceful walk or hike through the forests, granite ridges, and lakeside scenery of the Parry Sound District. The area around Whitestone, Dunchurch, and Magnetawan offers a great mix of easy waterfront strolls and moderate trails with rewarding views — perfect for all ages and fitness levels.
Here are some of the best walking and hiking trails within a short drive from your cottage:
Drive time from most Whitestone cottages: 5–15 minutes Location: Parking area at the entrance to North Meadowcove Road (northwest end of Whitestone Lake, a few kilometres outside Dunchurch) Highlights: A scenic 3.5 km loop (about 2.9–3 km depending on the source) through a beautiful mixed forest of towering hemlocks and vibrant oak trees. The trail includes a steep climb to a rocky ridge with filtered views over Whitestone Lake. Open granite outcrops make great spots for a snack or photos. Difficulty: Moderate (rugged in sections — sturdy footwear recommended) Tip: Avoid flip-flops! Blackflies can be intense in late spring/early summer — keep moving on buggy days.
Drive time from Whitestone: ~15–25 minutes Location: Just west of Ardbeg, off Clear Lake Road Highlights: A 2.5 km linear trail (5 km round trip) on rockier terrain with a different feel from the Whitestone Lake trail. It passes through areas shaped by recent forestry, offering a reminder of the working forest around us. Named in memory of a long-time Ardbeg resident. Difficulty: Moderate More info: discoveryroutes.ca/whitestone/nesbitt/
Drive time: 10 minutes or less Location: In Dunchurch along the waterfront of Whitestone Lake Highlights: A flat, accessible walking path with docks, washrooms, accessible picnic tables, and a children’s play area. Ideal for a gentle evening stroll, birdwatching, or a family walk with strollers or mobility aids. Difficulty: Easy
These trails offer everything from quick, easy walks right by the lake to more adventurous hikes with ridge-top views and forest immersion. They’re a wonderful way to slow down and truly connect with the natural beauty of the Whitestone area.
